Active Citizenship
A staple of the UKSD programming has been our active citizenship projects and community service initiatives. Through working with youth on a daily basis throughout all of our programming, we have become increasingly aware of ever-growing social issues which impact the lives of many of our youth.
The UKSD KidzPlay4FreeProject has been designed to create a global social awareness about issues that affect communities throughout the world. Once this awareness has been instilled in our members, we continue to encourage participants to develop their knowledge and passion of social issues through participating within Active Citizenship Projects. These initiatives show our participants that through positive actions they can create change and develop awareness within their peers and the communities they live in to help combat the many issues they face.
In order to become more engaged within our Active Citizenship Projects and community service initiatives, we have created the Community Empowerment & Leadership Club. Through the club, we work with high school aged participants who have created projects to tackle concerns such as substance abuse, homelessness, hunger, and gender equity. In addition to having in-person meetings, we also have a digital component to keep us connected. Because we have participants from across the globe, we provide the space needed to collaborate.
The Community Empowerment and Leadership Club has a google classroom where we are able to interact through discussion threads, group zoom meetings, and one on one online meetings. Our online platform provides a place for participants to share their ideas and thoughts, to have virtual discussions regarding social issues, and to seek support and mentorship.
The most important aspect of our program is that the volunteer opportunities and community service initiatives have been designed by current UKSD members and alumni, using the Projects Through Play model and philosophy. Each concept is built from the ground up and implemented by our very own members.
